Learn Self Control with Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga is one of the oldest chapters in the voluminous book regarding the science of yoga that has been developed by the versatile Guru, Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta after years of extensive research. The system involves the scientific postulates of methodical synchronization of breathing with the varied postures of the body.

Ashtanga yoga is one of the most effective and scientific modes of controlling the physique and the psyche simultaneously. It generates a fair amount of internal heat accompanied by profuse sweat which helps the body dispel internal toxic matter. Ashtanga yoga is that branch of yoga that helps detoxify the wide variety of internal organs and muscles, resulting in increased strength, better circulation and a better disposition.

This method also helps people to have a calm temperament that in turn depicts coolness and decency in his or her demeanor. There are really a very little number of men who actually know the in-depth technical know-how of Ashtanga yoga. Sri K. Pattabhi is an eminent figure in India who has mastered the art with his dedication and presently teaches the unique system at the Ashtanga yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.

The technicalities were taught by Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari to his beloved student Sri T. Krishnamacharya during the early 1900s, who in turn imparted the detailed knowledge to Sri K. Pattabhi, starting in 1927.

Basic Components of Ashtanga Yoga

As per the teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi the basic components of this unique system has been delineated below:

Vinyasa: Vinyasa is the system related to the systems of breathing and movement and acts as the cleansing agent for the internal parts of the body as it generates intense sweat as an essential by-product. Sri Pattabhi teaches that there should be one breath corresponding to every single action or movement. The first Vinyasa should be inhaling corresponding to the first action while the next Vinyasa should be exhaling accompanied by the immediately following action.

Tristhana: This part is associated with the three sub-points posture, breathing and direction, which purifies the body, nervous system and mind respectively. The salient components of breathing system are Mula and Uddiyana bandhaa which are the lower abdominal and the anal locks that seal in energy and body strength.

Vital Aspect: The most vital part of the system is to wipe off the six harmful elements, affecting mental triggers kama (desire), krodha (anger), moha (delusion), lobha (greed), matsarya (envy) and mada (sloth) from the mind to attain spirituality. With all these successfully completed a person can enjoy the actual meaning of Ashtanga yoga.

"Yoga Scranton offers nothing less than a healthy mind and body through its daily practice."

Book Review: Power Yoga
I have slowly become increasingly obsessed with yoga. Ever since my sister introduced me to it six years ago, I've practiced once a week or so, but over the last several months, as my work life has gotten more intense and I've spent more hours in an office chair each day, I've started doing sun salutations and other poses both in the morning and after work. It seems to not only reverse (and prevent) some of the physical effects of sitting down all day, but it also leaves me feeling more grounded
In the rainy northwest, thinking of the dry southwestern desert...
Oregonians pride themselves on "loving the rain" here (definitely a "love it or leave it" mentality!) but, for those of us who haven't grown up in it, the winters here can be a little bit difficult sometimes. Makes me long for the desert, like these earrings, which feature horn, moonstone, turquoise and sterling silver. It takes little more for my own personal visions to fill in with cacti, joshua trees and rattlers, and the color of the horn brings to mind the best shade of worn-in cowboy boot

Deep Metaphor
In yoga class yesterday I realized something - that I can hold Triangle Pose (finally!) for the full minute, if I dont go too deep into the posture. I have no idea if this is a good thing, but Im gonna go with it for now. It made me wonder, while attempting to hold the next pose (Dandayamana - Bibhaktapada Janushirasana), forehead pressed to knee, gasping for breath & staring with my right eye at the sweat pooling in my navel, if I shouldnt also apply the same policy to the rest of my life
